The Night Also Is Thine

“The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.” (Psalms 74:16). God created the day and the night. Both are His. During the day we can see the sun and the blue sky and, depending on the weather, possibly some clouds. We might catch a glimpse of the moon or occasionally Venus, but for all intents and purposes during the day we can't see much past the end of our nose cosmologically speaking. But at night, the heavens are revealed. If we are lucky enough to be in a remote area away from too much light pollution we can see millions of stars that are completely visible during the day. It is important for us to look up at the night sky from time to time to get a little perspective on how vast and infinite are God's creations and how vanishingly small we are in comparison to them. This can help to keep us grounded and humble and grateful that even with so many billions of other worlds out there in the universe, Heavenly Father still takes the time to respond to our individual needs. But if we never experienced the night, then we would never be able to see the light and beauty of the stars. God is like the sun. When He is around, we can only see His light. It doesn't mean that there aren't other lights around, but just like we can't see the stars when the sun is out, we can't see the light from anyone else when God is standing right in front of us. But God created the night so that each of us, like stars, could let our lights shine. We don't need to panic or despair if God has temporarily allowed the sun to set and darkness to appear. We can see the light of our brothers and sisters more clearly when we are wading through our own personal nights of darkness. The Sun will rise again but until then, God created the night also and has given it to us that our light might shine for all to see.
