The Lord Sustained Me
“I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.” (Psalms 3:5). David wrote this when his own son was chasing after him. Although David slew Goliath and perhaps tens of thousands more of his enemies, he spent quite a lot of his life running and hiding from one person or another. I’m sure we’ve all had days like David where we laid down to sleep and miracle of miracles we awoke the next day. And maybe we’ve had months or years of just somehow trying to hang on and make it through one more day. Sometimes, that can be enough. We are creatures of light and joy but sometimes we are fighting with everything we have just to stay alive for one more day. I know it can feel like no one is with us, but every morning that we wake up again is proof that the Lord is sustaining us. We can’t see it right now but He has a great work for us to do. If we’re awake right now, we just have to hold on until we fall asleep. And if we awake again, then we know that the Lord is preserving us for something and it isn’t just because He likes to watch us suffer. We don’t have to know when or how it’s going to get better, but we can be reminded every time that we wake up that God has held back the destroying angel at least one more day. If we can’t even walk or crawl, the least we can do is allow God to carry us. Our enemies both without and within will tire before our Savior does, and when they do, when we finally emerge from the fog, then we will see how great and wonderful are the things that God has prepared for us while He sustained us through our toughest moments.
