The Expectation of The Poor
“For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.” (Psalms 9:18). Whether we are poor financially, poor in spirit, poor in health, poor in our friendships or relationships, or poor in any other manner, we have an expectation that our poverty will one day be replaced with prosperity. But as days blur to months and then years, it seems to many of us like our expectation for relief is all in vain. When dreams have withered and hopes have died, what are we to do? How do we continue to put our trust in God and His plan for us when it seems like everyone around us is blissfully enjoying the riches of life and we are languishing in our poverty? I don’t know why some people just seem to be getting richer and richer while we get poorer and poorer. I don’t know why some people walk through life without ever having a single hair of their head harmed, while others seem to know nothing but agony every waking moment of their lives. What I do know is that they needy will not always be forgotten, and that they expectations of the poor will not perish forever. Christ knows what we are going through. He has important reasons for trusting us to continue being poor for far longer than seems just or fair. It will all make sense in the end. We will see in the end that all of our hopes and dreams will be resurrected and taste all the sweeter for us having endured so much bitterness for so long. I hope that if our expectations for relief are only a distant memory, we will nevertheless have faith that they will not stay dead forever.
