That My Footsteps Slip Not

ā€œHold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.ā€ (Psalms 17:5). As we strive to walk the Lord’s path, we might picture our Savior up in front of us, leading the way, or by our side cheering us on, or maybe even just flat out carrying us. But how often do we picture Him holding us up so that our footsteps slide not? Imagine that the gospel path is a patch of ice and we’ve never tried to walk on the ice before, but Jesus is there to hold us up while we give it a try. He is not carrying us, just supporting us. We are still free to try to walk on our own two feet as best we may, but just in case things get a little wobbly, He’s there to keep us steady. I love this image. Sometimes the path in front of us is too hard for us to do on our own, but we don’t want to just give up entirely and have someone carry us. Christ wants us to do as much as we possibly can on our own two feet, but if we ask Him to, He will hold us up so that we don’t slip and fall. Choosing the best possible option can get really slippery. There’s no shame in both trying to do as much as we can and also leaning on the Lord when our best just isn’t good enough to keep us from slipping all on our own. Christ never gets tired of holding us up, and I hope that we never get tired of asking for or accepting His steadying hand as we try to keep from slipping.
