Our Daily Bread
“Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11). A few months ago I was picking up groceries for my mother and she told me to skip past all of the bread on the shelves and talk directly with the bakery to get some of the bread that had been baked fresh that day. I generally avoid talking with people while I shop if I can help it but this was definitely worth it. There’s nothing quite like fresh bread. Once you give it a few days, it starts to get hard and stale. Give it a few more and it starts to mold. But bread on the same day that it was baked is truly special. Jesus Christ declared Himself the Bread of Life. When we pray for our daily bread, we are really praying for the Heavenly help of our Savior Jesus Christ. But some of us don't always seek out the Bread of Life on a daily basis. Sure, Jesus helped us out that one time when we really needed it, but we can take it from here. How many of us are content to leave the Bread of Life to simply collect dust in some forgotten cupboard, letting it grow drier and staler and harder all the time? We may even occasionally open the cupboard, look on the sad and dilapidated loaf with frustration and disgust, and decide that we don't really need a sandwich after all. If we are holding onto some stale and moldy version of our Savior’s love, it's time to let that bread go. Every day our Heavenly Father has a fresh loaf of Living Bread for us. All we have to do is ask. When we repent and clean out our cupboards and throw away all of the forgotten leftovers, we make room for our Daily Bread. And the more we eat fresh daily bread, the more likely we are to come back tomorrow and the day after that to get new bread. Christ is neither upset nor surprised when we have to come back to Him each and every day for help with new problems. That's why He bakes us up a fresh batch of bread every single day. He is much more upset when we turn our backs to Him and don't accept the daily bread He offers. Let's all remember that we need Jesus in our life at least at often as we need to eat, if not more so.
