Lighten My Eyes
“Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;” (Psalms 13:3). Sometimes we are blind because we are surrounded by darkness. But sometimes we can be in the middle of a noonday sun but our eyes cannot perceive the light. Things that ought to bring us joy and excitement don’t ever make it to us because everything is dark in our eyes. But we can pray to God that He may lighten our eyes. God can cast out the darkness in our eyes and our minds and our hearts and our soul. For those of us who have wandered through the light trapped in our own personal clouds of darkness, it can seem like a relief to merely sleep the sleep of death. But there is another way. Maybe not right away and maybe not all at once but God can cast out the darkness that is strangling us. And until that happy day comes, He can lighten our eyes. Maybe we can’t see or take in all of the light that is out there, but He can at least clear a tiny area right in front of our face. Christ is the light that “shineth in the darkness.” (John 1:5). He will be with us on our darkest days and even though there is darkness all around us, He is with us to lighten our eyes and push back the darkness just a little bit.
