In The Multitude Of Thy Mercy
“But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.” (Psalms 5:7). Why do we gather to worship? Why can’t we all just go separately into the woods or the wilderness or the top of a mountain and commune with our God all on our own? One of the first commandments that God ever gave was for Adam and Eve to multiply and replenish the earth, or, in other words, to help create a multitude. We gather together in the house of the Lord as a multitude because each of us needs a multitude of mercies, and most of those mercies are delivered to us through the ministrations of our brothers and sisters. I’m sure we have all felt the joy and deep satisfaction that comes from helping to lighten someone else’s load and comfort them in a way that only we could. And I am sure that we have all felt the relief and the peace that comes from someone reaching out and helping us in a way that no one else could. Satan and his minions have gotten ever more sophisticated at isolating each of us and cutting us off from each other. One of the biggest problems with sin and especially the shame that so often accompanies it is that it drives us to avoid everyone else. Thus, we are deprived of the multitude of mercies that we so desperately need, and so many in that multitude are also deprived of the mercies of which we are uniquely qualified to provide. None of us can do this alone. We need each other and the mercies that each of us can give. Let us all work a little harder to make sure that there is always a multitude of mercies.
