Blessings and Curses
“It may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day.” (2 Samuel 16:12). “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Matthew 5:44). These two verses present two consequences of someone attempting to curse us. Although most of us would rather not be plagued by enemies seeking to curse us and make our lives miserable, it is possible that the Lord will look on all of the afflictions that are being heaped upon us and He will bless us for it. Now, if God blesses us as a direct consequence of someone trying to curse us, then shouldn't we exercise a little more gratitude and humility and simply forgive those that curse us? Maybe we deserve their cursings and maybe we don't. Maybe they deserve our forgiveness and maybe they don't. But God saw us in our afflictions and blessed us regardless of who started it or not. So, can we just follow His example and bless those that curse us. At worst, they don't acknowledge our blessings at all and keep right on cursing us but we get to let go of our anger and bitterness and not let the curses stick to us. At best, they see our kindness and our forgiveness and they have a change of heart and start blessing us right on back. No matter what else is going on, if God is blessing us, then let's spread those blessings around, especially to those who curse us. God will only bless us more and eventually even those who curse us might start to bless us too.
