According To His Righteousness
“I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.” (Psalms 7:17). It may seem that to praise the Lord according to his righteousness is something of a lackluster start. It’s almost as if we are saying, I’ll say nice things about God... if He does something nice. But we all have to start somewhere, and trying to find some of the good things that God has done that are worthy of praise is actually a great place to start. It doesn’t matter how impossibly high our standards might be, if we are being honest, we will find that God has no problems meeting even our exacting standards. And the more we look for God’s righteousness, the easier we will find it to praise Him. We can look at everything that is wrong with this world and find many reasons to denounce and to denigrate God and ascribe to Him all manner of wickedness and ill intent. Millions have done it before us and millions will do it after us. But all who condemn God for the evils of the world have not taken the time to find out for themselves all of the ways in which God is righteous. As we spend more and more time studying God and all of His works and cataloging all of the ones that to us seem righteous and worthy of praise, we will get to know Him better and better and our thoughts and our hearts will draw closer to His. Pretty soon, we will find righteousness and praiseworthiness in all sorts of places that in our ignorance we might have assumed were downright wicked. If we keep at it long enough, we will come to understand that everything God does is according to His righteousness and we will be able to praise God even in the worst moments of our lives because we know that it is all part of the plan and the plan is beautiful beyond understanding.
